Yesterday the GuidePost team drove 258 kilometres to Frog Lake Cree Nation for a scheduled on-site IT support visit — one of several First Nations organizations across Alberta we provide managed IT services for. That’s part of the job. Reliable IT support means showing up, not just answering tickets from a desk.
What We Got Done
The visit was a mix of scheduled work and a broader look at where things stand across the Nation’s operations.
On the hardware side, we set up two computers and two printers, got a VoIP phone up and running, and fixed a printer that had been causing issues. Nothing glamorous — just the kind of practical, hands-on work that keeps a team productive day to day.
We also walked through their networking needs in detail. Frog Lake is growing, and with newer buildings and departments coming online, the infrastructure needs to keep pace. We assessed what they have, what they need, and what a proper network installation would look like going forward — including connectivity for the fire hall on-site, which has its own specific requirements.
IT Support for First Nations Organizations Across Alberta
Frog Lake Cree Nation is one of several Indigenous organizations in Alberta that GuidePost supports. IT support for First Nations organizations comes with its own set of considerations — multiple buildings, departments with different needs, essential services like fire halls that require reliable connectivity, and communities that are often far from the nearest IT provider.
Remote support handles a lot day to day, but nothing replaces being on the ground. You can’t properly assess a network by looking at it from a screen. That’s why scheduled on-site visits are a core part of how we work with communities like Frog Lake. For organizations planning infrastructure upgrades, Microsoft’s guide to modern network planning is also a useful reference for understanding what modern cloud-connected environments look like.
What’s Coming Next
Based on yesterday’s assessment, we have a clearer picture of what Frog Lake needs going forward — both for existing infrastructure and for the newer buildings coming online. We’ll be putting together recommendations and working with the Nation to prioritize what gets addressed and when.
We’re proud to support Frog Lake Cree Nation and look forward to continuing that work through our managed IT services.
